Free Forum Hosting in 2026: What You Really Get

Updated October 4, 2026

Free forum hosting comes in three kinds, and they are not equally free. Some services host your forum at no charge and pay for it with ads. Some forum software is free, but you pay for the server it runs on. And some platforms let you start a community for nothing because the community really belongs to them.

Knowing which kind you are choosing saves you from moving everything a year from now.

The three kinds of free

Free hosted forums. You sign up, pick a name, and your forum is live in minutes. The host covers the cost with ads shown to your members, and usually sells an upgrade to remove them.

Free software, paid hosting. Open source forum software costs nothing to download. You rent a server, install it, and keep it updated. The software is free. Your time and the server are not.

Free on someone else's platform. A subreddit or a social media group costs nothing and comes with a built-in audience. You do not control the rules, the design, or what happens to it.

Plans and limits change often. Check each provider's current terms before you commit, especially for ads and member caps.

What to check before you pick

  1. Ads. Who sees them, where, and what removing them costs.
  2. Your address. Whether you get a clean URL you can share and keep.
  3. Export. Whether you can take your posts and members with you if you leave.
  4. Moderation. Bans, approvals, private areas, and helpers with limited powers.
  5. Phones. Most of your members will arrive on one.
  6. Sign-up friction. Every extra step loses people.
  7. Longevity. How long the service has been around, and what happens to your forum if it closes.

The hidden cost of free software

Self-hosting phpBB, MyBB, Flarum, or Discourse gives you the most control. It also makes you the system administrator.

That means security updates, backups, spam registrations, email delivery, and the occasional 2 a.m. outage. A small server is cheap. The hours are the real price. If running a server sounds like fun, this is a great route. If it sounds like a chore, choose a hosted option.

When a BBS is the better forum

A forum is a set of threads. A BBS is a set of threads plus private mail, bulletins, a one-liner wall, and door games that members play a few turns a day. One person, the sysop, runs the whole place.

That combination matters for small groups. The hardest thing about a new forum is giving people a reason to come back before there is much to read. Daily game turns and leaderboards do that job while the conversation gets going.

EchoBBS hosts boards like this in the browser. You pick a name and a theme, add your message areas, switch on the doors you want, and share the link. There is no server to run.

A BBS fits when:

  • Your group is somewhere between 5 and a few hundred people.
  • You want the place to have a personality of its own.
  • You care more about regulars than about search traffic.

A traditional forum fits better when you are building a large public knowledge base with thousands of threads that strangers will find through search.

Forum or chat?

If you are choosing between a forum and a chat app, the question is pace. Chat is for conversation that happens now. A forum or a BBS is for conversation that should still make sense next week. Our BBS vs Discord guide covers that choice in detail.

Frequently asked questions

Is there truly free forum hosting?

Yes. Free hosted services exist and work well for small communities. The usual trade is ads on your forum, with a paid upgrade to remove them.

Which free forum has no ads?

Ad-free usually means self-hosting open source software on your own server or paying for an upgrade. EchoBBS boards currently show no ads. Check each host's current terms.

Can I move my forum later?

Sometimes. Open source software lets you export everything. Hosted services vary, so check the export options before you start.

How many members do I need to start a forum?

Fewer than you think. Ten people who post every week will carry a community. An empty forum with fifty categories will not.

Is a BBS the same as a forum?

No. A BBS includes forum-style message areas and adds private mail, bulletins, and door games, all run by a single sysop. See What is a BBS?
